Basic description

• Main aim of cohort
  The aim of this study is to research the causes of impaired lung growth and asthma development in term- and preterm infants, as well as in infants with a predisposition to asthma. We are particularly interested in the harmful influence of environmental pollution, and whether or not certain predispositions (prematurity, maternal asthma or genetic variations) may make infants more vulnerable to air pollution. With the results of this study we hope to develop prevention measures or new therapeutic concepts for the future.

  Enrollment criteria, please specify
  White ethnicity, ability of parents to speak one of the major Swiss languages (German, French), no severe maternal health problems, no maternal drug abuse other than nicotine, no known major birth defects or airway malformation. In addition, for healty infants: term delivery (at least 37 weeks), no perinatal disease of the newborn such as respiratory distress, need of oxygen or other major respiratory diseases diagnosed after birth.
  
  Exclusion criteria, please specify
  Need for respiratory support >three days postnatally, severe malformations or known diseases, maternal drug abuse, known severe maternal disease, severe problems of communication (with child or caregivers).
  
  Planned age of children at end of follow-up
