Enrollment criteria, please specify
There were 22359 consecutive births which accounted for about 10% of all births in Finland and about one third of those in the county of Uusimaa. At birth 1196 (5.4%) of the consecutive cases presented with at least one predefined risk: APGAR score lower than 7 at 5 or 15 minutes (n=372), birth weight under 2000 grams (n=317) out of whom 116 under 1500 grams, significant hyperbilirubinemia (n=368), severe respiratory difficulties necessitating care (n=161), neurological symptoms (n=195), maternal diabetes (n=95), infant hypoglycemia (n=104), and severe infection (n=36); 19% had more than one risk factor.
Exclusion criteria, please specify
Of the 1196 infants, 158 died before the age of 5, 25 were severely disabled and were excluded
